Department of Public Health Engineering Local
An important body under the government department. The Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) was established in 1936 with the responsibility of improving public health through safe water supply. Later in 1945 it was added to the responsibility of providing sanitation services.
Immediately after the independence of Bangladesh in 1971, the government first emphasized the importance of rehabilitating the destroyed water supply and sanitation systems and then started installing new infrastructure through DPHE. In the same vein, safe water supply is being provided to the entire country except the areas under WASA at present 
The responsibility of construction and management of sanitation system is entrusted to this department. Safe water and sanitation play a vital role in protecting public health. The Department of Public Health Engineering is working tirelessly to provide safe water and sanitation facilities to the people. As a result, Bangladesh ranks one of the top in South Asia in terms of safe water and sanitation coverage. Different types of safe water sources in rural areas (tubewells)
And maintenance of sanitary latrine facilities is the main responsibility of the Department of Public Health Engineering. In addition, the department provides technical assistance to the Union Parishad through the WATSAN Committee for the maintenance of rural water supply and sanitation infrastructure, strengthening health care and improving the surrounding environment. As a result of rapid urbanization, the demand for municipal water supply and sanitation is increasing in the north.
To meet this demand, the department is assisting the municipalities in planning and institutional development under technical assistance including construction of water supply and sanitation infrastructure. Besides, it has been implementing necessary activities to maintain safe water supply and sanitation system in case of emergency due to floods, cyclones, epidemics etc.
